| MICHELANGELO MERISI DA CARAVAGGIO MICHELANGELO MERISI DA CARAVAGGIO (1571-1610) This tempestuous Italian devoted most of his high-profile career to religious painting, though much of his work was rejected on grounds of decorum or theological incorrectness. The work produced in the years before the early death of this most important painter show creative genius. The term 'caravaggio' is applied to the use of lighting in paintings, so that the subjects become photographic in quality. Caravaggio had no formal training and no pupils, but many followers, who learned from his advancement in painting techniques. |
