| EUGENE DELACROIX (1798-1863) The output of this French painter was enormous, and he is widely regarded as the greatest painter of the Romantic movement. He studied the Old Masters at the Louvre, and was influenced by The Hay Wain by John Constable, which was exhibited in the 1824 Salon, and decided to work in England during 1825.In his later career he became one of the most distinguished monumental mural painters in the history of France, and was liked in some more 'faithful' circles for his appreciation of religious works, and van Gogh said of him that only he and Rembrandt could paint the face of Christ. Delacroix's studio in Paris now serves as a museum to his life and work, but the Louvre has the most beautiful collection of his paintings. |
